Home Up Half Time Die Broke

I just finished a reading a book called Half Time by Bob Buford. The book has really made me think.I would appreciate any thoughts or input that you wish to give to help me in what the author calls the journey from success to significance.

Allow me to share a few ideas that I got out of the book and explain how I think I understood what I read.

1. Life is kind of like a football game.

It is just a game with a limited time frame composed of a first half and second (last half). The first half is important but the winning or losing takes place in the second half.

2. There is a half time between the two parts of the game.

During half time you need to reflect on what you did right and wrong in the first half, in summary you need to learn from the first half. You also need to use this time to plan the second half and develop a strategy to accomplish your game plan.

3. The second half should be played differently.

The author shared that a decision that he made in his second half, is that because of his business and financial success, he will only spend 20% of his work time being in involved in "regular business" and 80% being involved in "ministry business." He further stated that he is no longer as young as he was in the first half and he has learned the lessons of what works and doesn’t work for him. Therefore he intends to concentrate on his strengths and not become involved in things that he is not suited for and doesn’t enjoy. The author gave the example that he is a strategic thinker and not necessarily a day to day doer. Therefore he simply says no to the doer work and instead concentrates on where he can make real contributions. He further stated that might mean that some people and organizations might not want him on those terms, which is not necessarily bad, and would cause him to look to other organizations.

4. Life and Football are not individual activities

Even though you might be very good at certain activity or skills, in order to win you have to play with others and you are also dependent upon good coaching in order to succeed.

5. Our Generation is probably the first (maybe the last) that has this opportunity.

Past generations have had shorter life spans and were void of the economic, social, technology and other opportunities that are part of our daily life. The concept that we have of being able to sit down, plan and then implement a strategic different course of action is unique and we must strive not to miss it.
